American Slang - Part1

Hi all,
This article is all about American Slang. Since there are unlimited words to cover, I am planning to split the most common slangs and publish in parts - each article having few popular slangs.

Below is the Part 1 of American Slang.

1. Back Burner
Meaning:
Reduced Priority; Not an urgent priority. To put something on the 'back burner' is to put something off until later stage. Put aside for the time being, as a subject that is not of immediate concern but that may be activated later; postponed
Example:
  1. We worked hard on the design of the project at first, but when a new project came along, we put it on the back burner.
  2. Dozens of cases were put on the back burner.

2. Hang out
Meaning:
To pass time idly; to loaf with pleasure, at ease.
To relax completely in an unassuming way (esp in the phrase let it all hang out)

Example:
  1. We spent the weekend just hanging out at my pad.
  2. We'll leave soon. Just hang out for a minute.
  3. The police know where the thieves hang out
3. On Cloud Nine
Meaning:
To be extremely happy, elated.
Very happy.
This is derived from the idea that clouds are part of heavenly paradise, and that the higher you go, the closer you are to ultimate bliss.

Example:
  1. I was on cloud nine after I got the promotion.
  2. She just bought her first new car and she's on cloud nine.
  3. A New York couple really will be on cloud nine when they marry later this month

4. In a funk
Meaning:
Depressed, upset or disturbed.
This is derived from the word 'fonck', meaning 'disturbed' or 'agitated'.

Example:
  1. This winter weather really has me in a funk.
  2. Cherie is in a funk about her new haircut. She thinks it's much too short.
  3. I've been in a blue funk all week. Don't get in a funk about your job. Things'll get better
5. Early Bird
Meaning:
Someone who wakes up and starts working very early in the day; someone who arrives before an event begins. A person who gets up early.
Having to do with early arrival.
This phrase comes from the proverb, "The early bird catches the worm".

Example:
  1. Peter is a real early bird; he's always the first person at the office in the morning.
  2. There were some early birds who arrived before the party was set to start.
  3. The early-bird special this week is a free six-pack of iced tea for the first 100 visitors
